Salute to the Navy
Quarters "A", Pearl Harbor, Hawaii
By Beverley S. Grimmer
Vice Chargee de Presse

When Chaine members approached Chevalier Admiral Thomas Boulton Fargo, Commander, U.S. Pacific Command, about presenting a Chaine event to thank members of the U.S. Navy for all they do for our country, he not only embraced the concept wholeheartedly, but he and his wife, Sarah, graciously offered the use of their home for the evening.

September 27th, 2003, Chaine members gathered at the Fargo home, the historic Quarters "A" on Pearl Harbor. Our honored guests for the evening included U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps enlisted and officer personnel, as well as commanders of the other branches of the military serving in Hawaii, and their spouses.

After a very warm welcome in the foyer by Admiral and Mrs. Fargo, Bailli Fred Hellekes, Bailli Provincial Robert Lee, Jr., Dame de la Chaine Roberta Lee, Bailli Delegue des Etats-Unis Brooks Firestone, Chambellan Laurence Vogel and Dame de la Chaine Anna Lise Vogel, guests moved through the home and out to the garden where they found themselves stepping back in time just a bit.

In the garden under the pergola, we found a cosmopolitan bar and a martini bar where the drinks were chilled as they shot through the center of an ice sculpture submarine on their way to our glasses. Waiters meandered through the crowd serving crisply chilled champagne and passing the freshest hors d'ouevres. As we were enjoying the refreshment and mingled getting to know one another, the multi-talented Miss Cathy Foy and beautifully graceful Miss Aloha Hula 2003 entertained us along with strains of the most memorable island music as produced by Conductor Aaron Mahi and the Royal Hawaiian Band.

Once we were all gathered and word was received from Hawaii Prince Executive Chef and Vice Conseiller Culinaire Goran Streng that dinner would soon be ready for service, members and guests entered the dining tents to find their seats and dinner partners and bailliage officers prepared for a short induction presentation.

With Bailli Fred Hellekes and Bailli Provincial Robert Lee, Jr. orchestrating events, Bailli Delegue des Etats-Unis Brooks Firestone inducted one new member, elevated Garrett Saikley to Vice Chancelier Argentier, and bestowed the titles of Chevalier d'Honneur upon Admiral Fargo, Maitre d'Honneur upon Michael Jochim and Conseil d'Honneur upon Fred Honda. Bailli Fred Hellekes then welcomed our honored military guests and their spouses as well as Bailli Delegue des Etats-Unis Brooks Firestone, Bailli Delegue des Etats-Unis Honoraire Burt Hobson and his wife, Maxine, Maui Bailli Mitch Kysar and Kauai/Oahu Bailli Bruce Liebert and his wife, Vice Chargee de Presse Judith Leibert.

The time had finally arrived for us to settle in and await the fabulous array of delights created and prepared by Chef Streng and his staff. Each course brought a new delicacy to be savored and enjoyed both visually and by the palate. Virtually every table remarked incredulously on the prefect temperature and rich, rich flavors of the wild mushroom cream. How was this even possible we all questioned. We were eating outside under the stars!

Also remarked on by so many was the stunningly perfect presentation of the char broiled tenderloin beef. Grilled to perfection, it simply melted in your mouth. After dinner, many searched out Chef Streng to find his secret, only to be totally delighted as he told of the huge kiawe wood grill hidden away behind a garage.

As the evening drew to a close, Bailli Fred Hellekes conveyed our most heartfelt bravo and mahalo to Chef Streng and his staff, thanked the bailliage and regional officers for all their hard work preparing for the evening and expressed a huge mahalo to Admiral and Mrs. Fargo. They made our evening at Quarters "A" one we will forever remember as a once-in-a-lifetime event.
